Lithium campaign image
Graphic design: Austin Redman
Conceived as a spa resort, the exhibition Lithium—currently on display at Het Nieuwe Instituut—highlights the beneficial and destructive aspects of the eternal human search for energy.
Researchers, designers and artists reflect on the role of the chemical element lithium in powering today’s economy. How many times can we recharge our batteries without addressing the causes of depletion, in both human bodies and the planet?

over Het Nieuwe Instituut
Through its activities the institute aims to increase the appreciation of the cultural and social significance of architecture, design and digital culture and to strengthen the interaction between these disciplines. In a period characterised by radical change, it wants to moderate, stimulate and facilitate debate about architecture, design and digital culture through research and a public programme. The broadening and deepening of the public’s appreciation is a fundamental starting point.
