What is YOM?
YOM is a speculative design project that critically examines the impact of growing individualization on future food culture. At its core stands the “YOM” machine, which uses collected data to create personalized nutrient combinations, embodying the motto “You eat what you are.” The project questions whether personalization risks overshadowing the social and cultural value of eating together. This idea is supported by a typographic tool that visualizes personalization through individually adapted letterforms, and by packaging design that reflects diverse needs.
Project Elements
The aluminum YOM machine with an integrated screen is showing an explanatory video, a speculative short film. The speculative food prototypes created with 3D printing is displayed together with customized cardboard packaging.
A special highlight is the interactive type tool that creates different type letters based on fictional data to visually personalize the graphic design of the packaging to show the personalization of the product.
Impact of YOM
YOM makes the fusion of technology and nutrition tangible, sparking reflection on naturalness, health, and the social role of food. It demonstrates how design can act as a tool to provoke thought and foster social interventions.
