The first lamp that draws its owner outside and grows together with any tree. In addition, the external power source (the Fruit-battery) is the switch of the lamp. It can be connected to any form of renewable energy and is also easy to charge wirelessly.

Collaboration with nature

First, I want to introduce you to my product. Imagine a lamp that grows with nature, draws its energy from it and spurs its user into action. The lamp fits around any tree and grows with the trunk. This way, nature is not hindered. The lamp catches the eye and will attract attention. It is also a statement; nature and modern art go perfectly together. The shape of the lamp was created out of the desire to bring the indoors outside. To make nature feel as comfortable as the living room. For this purpose, I chose the archetype of a lampshade. However, when hanging around the tree, the shape can also give the illusion of an abstract fungus. Thus, the design plays with human and natural perspective. The shape of the spiral lighting, is inspired by the old telephone cable. By combining this shape with modern led technology, a lamp has been created that is both elastic and dimensionally stable. The human aspect of the spiral lighting is that it gives a recognizable feeling of an old-fashioned light bulb.

Fruit battery

The lamp is cordless and gets its energy from the specially developed fruit battery. A battery in the shape of a fruit that you can connect to the lamp to light it. When the lamp needs to be switched off, you just “pick” the fruit battery from the tree, and the connection will be broken. We live in a world where our step counter tells us to get moving. We feel obliged to move in the gym where we are commandeered by machines what we have to do. I want to make sure we move to get out into nature. To turn on my lamp in a beautiful spot and look around again. To see what the lamp illuminates and rediscover how nice outdoor life can be. The fruit battery is wirelessly rechargeable and can therefore always be connected to the latest technologies. The product will remain usable if there are new ways to generate energy in the future. Think of energy from plants, trees ect.

underlying idea

Many tech companies are looking for a solution to lighting that produces less light pollution. As a small starting entrepreneur and designer, this is not achievable for me. So we started looking at other alternatives. Here I discovered that people simply have to turn off the lights when they are not using them. The Nature by Night lamp ensures that you can enjoy light for a maximum of 5 hours. After these 5 hours, the battery is empty and needs to be recharged. This prevents the lamp from being left on endlessly. Because you have this action, you will also be much more thoughtful with the lighting. Not just leave it on because you can. Because Nature by Night can be attached to a tree, it saves a lot of material and transport costs. In addition, this lamp does not require the use of large metal furnaces to process metal. This means that this lamp has a considerably smaller carbon footprint than traditional lighting.

About Bas de Wolf

As a designer, I am mainly inspired by the past. By looking at how certain things were done back then because they simply couldn't be done any other way, I now find inspiration in designing products that don't just burden the user more than they do now. Instead, I want to encourage the user to be aware of his surroundings. My projects bring history and the future together. In this way, I create a product that not only can be used today, but can be used for many generations to come.
