Audible Furniture
Audible furniture is a study in mechanically produced sound and its application on furniture. The Helsinki based designer, Hemmo Honkonen, holds a Master’s degree in interior architecture from Aalto University and has graduated as a guitar builder/luthier-artisan from IKATA. In his work, Honkonen combines aspects of his educational background, furniture and instruments, sound and movement. All the sounds are acoustic and generated through mechanical movement, meaning that physical interaction with the piece triggers the sound. Sound becomes an integral part of the furniture, emerging naturally through its use. In Honkonen’s work, sound takes centre stage. Mundane furniture items take on a new dimension and purpose with sound.
The Ethnos collection explores the relationship between sound and visual expression. The characteristics of the sounds and the movements required to produce them shape the visual expression and physical form of each piece. Each piece is inspired by the culture or environment associated with the sound, reflecting its origins through form and expression.
