Powerfull statement
BioArtFashion is a series of sculptural wearable artworks made from seaweed, mushrooms, lichen, and other organic residual materials. Inspired by invisible underground, intern (fungal) networks, fashion artist Agnes van Dijk explores the connections between humans, plants, and ecosystems. Just as algae and fungi are connected underground, the project shows how interdependent humans, animals, and nature are.
In an era dominated by overconsumption, the drive for artificiality, and the depletion of ecosystems, BioArtFashion offers a radical alternative. The works constitute a powerful statement against the throwaway culture of our society and demonstrate how beauty can emerge from materials normally viewed as waste or perishable.
Using a self-developed, non-toxic preservation technique, Van Dijk transforms bio-material into sustainable, wearable creations. The materials remain flexible, skin-friendly, and repairable, while their organic character remains visible. Each work arises from an intensive process of collecting, preserving, and manual experimentation.
