Kollektiv Plus X designed BLAUPAUSE for the city of Kiel with the aim to transform marginalised urban spaces into vivid places for community. Building blocks form a trio of Sculptural Urban Architectures that can be placed wherever needed.

Building Blocks for transforming urban spaces

BLAUPAUSE is a mobile urban architecture with the playful idea of using building blocks to pop up various scenarios in the urban space. The result is a trio of a stage, a grandstand, and a kiosk. Three mobile trailers serve as the foundation on which the individual building blocks can be transported and stored.
Within a short space of time, the three trailers transform into landscapes of geometric shapes. They are a place to stay, an event infrastructure, and an art object.

What's behind the name?

The installation serves as a landmark for the city of Kiel while simultaneously inviting people to take a break from the city's bustling activity. The name BLAUPAUSE combines two layers of meaning: "Blau" (blue) represents the color of the sea that shapes the city, while "Pause" signifies a moment of respite—an invitation to linger without the pressure to consume. At the same time, BLAUPAUSE is intended as a "draft" in the literal sense: a "Blaupause" (blueprint) for new urban spaces that create room for freedom and allow people to come together to reimagine the city.

How did the project come to be?

BLAUPAUSE was realized as the winning design of the art and design competition “Temporary Urban Furniture” of the city of Kiel.

About Kollektiv Plus X

Kollektiv Plus X is a design and urbanism collective based in Halle and Leipzig, Germany. Our projects operate at the interface of art, spatial planning, design, and social work. We create urban interventions that see public space as a stage and stand up for a vibrant urban culture. Usually we are crafting our projects ourselves – in this case the construction was carried out by Studio Mett.
