Perspectives on change and innovation
The Design Innovation Sessions bring together design, research, and practice to explore how design-driven approaches can contribute to societal change and innovation. Through keynotes, inspiring projects, and collaborative conversations, we look at how these approaches are being applied to complex challenges, from health and wellbeing to circular economy and sustainable transitions.
Which emerging methods and applications can redefine existing knowledge and practices? And how can design, design research, and innovation contribute to meaningful change? As part of Dutch Design Week’s Mission Days, the Design Innovation Sessions are specially curated for a professional audience who want to be inspired and exchange ideas on real change.
AI & creativity
Generative AI can write, design, and create in seconds, but does that make it creative, and who actually benefits? This session digs into the tensions GenAI brings to the creative industries. What happens if AI development stays profit-driven, and what would it take for the creative industries to actively shape their own future instead? From measuring machine creativity to safeguarding human work: we’re here to sharpen the thinking.
Meet the speakers
The keynote is by Kars Alfrink, postdoctoral researcher at TU Delft, who will explore the tensions generative AI creates in the design field. Rather than choosing between wholesale rejection and uncritical embrace, he will look at emerging design practices that work with these tensions and offer concrete glimpses of better digital futures. Other speakers include Monika Kackovic and Ana Oprescu, who will share insights from the SafeGenAI research project; Daniëlle Arets, Crown Member of the Council for Culture and Professor of Designing Journalism at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, who will discuss AI as a cultural technology and the role of the cultural and creative sector in responsible AI; and Jop Quirindongo, founder of Lowres Creative Studio, Head of Curators at Dutch Digital Design and member of BNO’s Design x AI taskforce.
The session is moderated by Dymphie Braun, programme maker, facilitator and strategist working across art, design, digital culture and storytelling. With her focus on equality and connection, she will guide the conversations between speakers and audience.
