Perspectives on change and innovation
The Design Innovation Sessions bring together design, research, and practice to explore how design-driven approaches can contribute to societal change and innovation. Through keynotes, inspiring projects, and collaborative conversations, we look at how these approaches are being applied to complex challenges, from health and wellbeing to circular economy and sustainable transitions.
Which emerging methods and applications can redefine existing knowledge and practices? And how can design, design research, and innovation contribute to meaningful change? As part of Dutch Design Week’s Mission Days, the Design Innovation Sessions are specially curated for a professional audience who want to be inspired and exchange ideas on real change.
Care by design
Ageing populations, staff shortages, rising healthcare costs: the pressure on the health system is immense, and MedTech can play an important role in easing that pressure. From wearable treatments to soft robotic artificial hearts: how can technology help improve care? And how can these developments create more space for healthcare professionals to focus on what truly matters? During this session, we explore what it takes to create healthcare innovations that respond to real needs and work in practice. How do we make sure we are solving a need worth solving? And what can design contribute throughout the process, from identifying unmet needs to developing technologies that work in practice?
Meet the speakers
The speakers are Eline van Beest, Operating Partner at Thuja Capital and Professor of Practice at TU Delft, with a keynote on why successful innovation starts long before solutions are designed. Drawing on the Biodesign approach, she will explore why deeply understanding the unmet need is essential and why even the most elegant solution has little value if it addresses the wrong challenge. Marina Toeters, initiator of by-wire.net and designer involved in Bilihome, will share how a design perspective shaped the development of wearable phototherapy for babies with jaundice, from early prototyping to technology development and certification. Bas Overvelde, Full Professor at the Autonomous Matter & Machines Lab at Eindhoven University of Technology, and Arie Paul van den Beukel, Professor of Applied Research in Industrial Design at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, will share insights from the Holland Hybrid Heart project, a multidisciplinary research collaboration developing a soft robotic artificial heart for patients with heart failure.
The session is moderated by Nathan de Groot, moderator, creative facilitator and event designer. With extensive experience guiding conversations on healthcare, social services and AI, including at Dutch Design Week, he will connect the different perspectives and encourage an interactive dialogue between speakers and audience.
