Hand-crafted bio-based sculptures
‘Fungal Bouquets’ are a series of sculptural objects made of porous and biodegradable materials, showcasing the cycle and diet of fungi. Combining tree matter such as bark, paper and wood, Bianca Isabel Young Co creates arrangements of carbon-rich ‘browns’, which are essential nutrients that only fungi can decompose and transform into humus. The work consists of three different designs, each representing reproductive phases within fungal ecosystems. Over time, the fungi take over the designed structures as their process of decomposition is characterised by changing colours and textures. As their are colonised, the pieces transform into a colourful fungal garden. Celebrating fungi and their particular aesthetics, 'Fungal Bouquets’ explores growth and sporing, as much as decomposition and decay, and applies circular thinking and soil science to designs that introduce beauty and curiosity to common perceptions of fungi.
