GROUND is a furniture collection by London-based designer Luis Ho that uses cork composites to explore how furniture can make the home less stimulating through material presence that resonates with the calming wild nature.

Safer and multi-sensory focused environment

GROUND is a material-led furniture collection that explores how design can create safer, less stimulating experiences at home. The project began from my personal experience living with elderly family members with vision loss, which led me to question why furniture is still so often designed to be perceived and react mainly through sight.

Sensory connections in daily rituals through home objects

The collection explores a multi-sensory bond between people and objects in interior spaces. GROUND uses soft interactions with touch and scent to make them recognisable through daily rituals. The flexibility of the cork composite also brings in irregular tactile surfaces and a near-body-temperature feel. Its structure absorbs noise and allows free movement, while the consistent texture makes it identifiable at first touch.

Honest and consistent material logic

GROUND also reflects a more honest material logic. Rather than hiding structure beneath upholstery, the sculpted and cast material forms both the surface and the structure of each piece. The work brings sensory qualities associated with natural environments into the domestic space, presenting furniture as a quiet material presence rather than just a problem-solving object.

About WEI STUDIO

WEI STUDIO specialises in material design that integrates sensory experiences in wild nature into urban life. We focus on natural composites that respond to routines, seeing natural ageing as a way to soften and develop object character, thereby fostering a deeper connection with the user. Ageing is seen as a process that deepens interactions over-time and creates a uniquely evolving environment.
