Romina Koopman turns a photo that has sat unseen on her phone for years into a 6-layer silkscreen print on LCD polarizer sheets, reflecting on the endless stream of images we consume and store.

Still Image

Red Boots begins with a forgotten photograph found in the artist’s phone archive: an image of a pair of red boots that holds no personal meaning or memory. It belongs to the constant stream of imagery we consume daily and store on our devices. Through a slow process of manual screen printing in six layers, this “unimportant” image is printed directly onto polarized sheets from an LCD screen. The device, which normally plays such a dominant role in our everyday lives, loses its original function. Instead of entertaining us with an endless feed, it is frozen in time, displaying a single image for the rest of its lifespan. The work is presented in a curved frame (34 x 80 cm).

About Romina Koopman

Romina Koopman explores how the digital image reshapes our perception of reality. Working between the tangible and the virtual, she questions the screen as a border. Photography is her shape-shifting medium, expressed in digital and analogue prints and multimedia installations.
