Most designers graduate knowing how to make things.
Few graduate knowing how the industry actually works — how work flows between clients, studios, and the organisations that control a significant share of professional opportunity. How to price fairly. How to build a pipeline. How to find the intermediary layer that connects talent to the right places.
This is not a personal failure. It is a structural gap — and it shows up the same way across every design context, every country, and every specialisation studied in the research behind this workshop.
The Gap Nobody Talks About is a 3-hour participatory workshop built directly from doctoral research (Netherlands · Turkey · UK · Spain · 2021–2024). It gives designers a map of the system, a clear picture of their own position in it, and a concrete first move to make before 48 hours have passed.
Workshop Flow
Welcome & framing What the research found. Why the gap is structural, not personal. Where you are in the creative ecosystem.
Act I: Ecosystem mapping A group exercise using the five-zone model developed from the research. Where are the designers, the clients, the intermediary organisations — and where are the gaps between them?
Act II: Skills audit An individual assessment of the eight management skills most consistently absent in early-career designers. Where are you strong? Where are you losing work, money or time without knowing why?
Act III: Integration roadmap A personal 30-day plan. Peer feedback. A positioning statement. A warm contact message and a cold contact message — written in the room, before you leave.
48-hour commitment One specific, completable action you will take before Friday evening. Said out loud. Written down. Witnessed by the group.
