What if design could make us feel safer in public space after dark, particularly women? The Stubborn Room (De Koppige Kamer) is a playful mobile space that provides comfort and homeliness, lowering the threshold to talk about safety in a warm, inviting way.

A room that dares to ask.

I am drawn to problems that everyone seems to avoid: issues we all recognize, but rarely address. The feeling of safety in public spaces is one of these, especially after dark. Although I personally experience it little, I wondered if design could contribute positively to this sense of safety for others.

This project is a search for what safety really means, what makes public spaces feel unsafe, and how that can be eased or addressed. As a “solution,” this playful living room on wheels was created. The room provides shelter, calm, and a sense of homeliness in places where these are not a given. You decide who enters, or if anyone enters at all. Feeling overwhelmed? Sink into a comfortable chair, close the curtains, and let the world wait outside. Perfect for when night falls and you’re not in the mood for strange men.

While the room does not offer a realistic solution, I believe the key lies in starting dialogue and raising awareness about these issues. In what situation would you use The Stubborn Room (De Koppige Kamer)?

I am a maker drawn to problems, driven by the urge to solve them. My work starts from function but takes shape through playfulness, interaction, and a smile. With wood, metal, and mechanics, I create objects where people and material connect.
