Mapu explores how traditional craft can shape contemporary technology. For DDW 2026 we co-create unique loudspeakers together with ceramicists Steven Dahlberg & Martin Mindermann, connecting people, place, material and sound.

RETHINK CRAFTS, RETHINK PRODUCTION METHODS!

Traditional craft is often treated as something to preserve. But what happens when it is allowed to evolve? Mapu explores how local materials, techniques and knowledge can become active participants in contemporary production.

COLLABORATIVE ALCHEMY

For Dutch Design Week, we want to bring this methodology to the Netherlands through collaboration with local ceramic makers. Rather than reproducing a fixed design, each speaker becomes an interpretation shaped by a maker’s story, journey, aesthetic and way of working. Conversations, materials, techniques, prototypes, failures, adjustments and unexpected results become part of the process, bringing together two seemingly antagonistic worlds: crafts and electronics.

CLAY, SOUND & SOUL

A speaker is more than a device: it gives form to human expression. Music carries memories, emotions, ideas, passion and creativity, yet the technology reproducing it is often anonymous and standardized. Mapu explores another possibility: objects where the maker’s inspiration, skill and individuality become part of the instrument itself. Like a live performance, each piece is unique, shaped by the makers, the material and the process.

About Mapu Speakers

Documentary Design is an independent interdisciplinary studio based in Bremen, founded by Chilean-German designer duo Pablo Ocqueteau and Philine von Düszeln. We explore how place, material culture and traditional knowledge shape identity, and how design can translate this knowledge into contemporary forms of production. Through Mapu Speakers, we bring together craft, sound and technology to imagine new regional models of production rooted in local knowledge.
