Awaken the Light
Lightwall shapes the experience of light by bringing human craftsmanship and computational processes into dialogue. The original work premiered at the California Center for the Arts Museum in 2026. For Dutch Design Week, a second-generation version was developed. A continuous pattern of hand-cut white paper unfolds across its surface, composed to reflect the hidden structure beneath. The installation is designed around duality. In daylight, the pattern comes forward, revealing the craftsmanship and underlying logic. After dark, the installation becomes its own source of light, with colour and motion reshaping the work through its optical system. A custom-designed motherboard orchestrates the entire system, allowing locally run AI to control both the light source and the motorised beam splitters in response to visitors’ movement. Lightwall rewards attention. Visitors who choose to linger are met with subtle changes in light and motion, revealing the balance between computational processes and the human hand.
