Family Connection at the Dinner Table
Spending time together and talking with each other helps families feel closer. Sharing thoughts and stories builds trust and makes everyone feel more connected. Family Dinner is often the best moment for this. It is not just about eating, but also about checking in with each other and enjoying time together.
The Distraction of Phones
These moments are often disturbed by phones. A message or notification can quickly break a conversation, making it harder to really listen to each other. While phones are useful, they can also get in the way of quality time together, especially during meals that are meant for talking and being present.
Light as a Way to Bring Awareness
That is why I created Lumen Harmony, an interactive light installation that helps families be more present at the dinner table. When you look at the lamp, it changes brightness to reflect how connected the family is. When everyone is engaged, the light stays on, reflecting a sense of harmony. But when someone uses their phone, their part of the lamp goes off, a gentle signal of disconnection. This small reminder encourages people to look up, talk, and connect.
