Moon Bound Book
For all of human history, we have looked up from the Earth at the Moon. All the time, the Moon has looked back up at us. We travel to the Moon in order to better understand it, but we should also ask… How does the Moon see the Earth?
Moon Bound project has gathered responses to this question from artists, writers, and other creatives from around the globe, and put these together in an artists’ book, which will land on the Moon’s south pole. Moon Bound is a 1 cm³ volume, which collects text and image submissions from 48 contributors, along with statements and manifestos that locate this project in the context of the ambitions for better representation of the arts in space.
About the project
The Moon Bound project was initiated and sponsored by the Moon Gallery Foundation—a cultural non-profit based in the Netherlands, working internationally to foster collaboration between space and art professionals. Since 2018, Moon Gallery has supported projects that explore the cultural dimensions of space exploration and contribute to establishing space art as a recognized, evolving discipline. At the heart of the foundation’s mission is the desire to inspire the public to think, dream, and act in relation to space—not as a distant frontier, but as a shared domain for dialogue, co-creation, and engagement.
Moon Bound extends this mission by prompting reflection on critical questions at the intersection of the arts and space sectors. Through its launch, the project seeks to open conversations about the role of artists in space exploration, the cultural value of their contributions, the legal and ethical complexities of intellectual property on the Moon, and other emerging issues raised by the book’s diverse and speculative contents.
