Step behind the scenes of future healthcare. This speculative installation, developed in collaboration with Máxima Medical Centre, Fontys and Pozob, offers a glimpse into the back-office of an ambient system, where Organomes perform the work of prevention and care in our absence.

Ambient Care

Ambient Care explores a future in which healthcare dissolves into responsive, osmotic infrastructures. At the centre of this system hovers the Organome: a living biological double grown from your own cells. It collects and transmits health data as you move through the world and acts on your behalf. Instead of you going to the hospital, your Organome travels, docks into environments and transmits data so they can anticipate your needs and act on your behalf.

Organome

Data from your stem cells is used to create miniature versions of your major organs, which are combined and grown into a personal multi-organ Organome. Each unit is a closed-loop system, kept stable and growing alongside you via AI-guided bioengineering. The Organome monitors how your environment and actions affect your health in real time. When you return home, it docks back into a smart home system to transfer data and adjust personalised care routines. From changing your walking route to updating your menu at a restaurant, the Organome will provide insight as to the long-term effects of your habits, allowing you to make conscious changes to improve your health.

Installation

Across a series of evocative stations, you encounter three Organome scenarios. The scenes are stripped of bodies but alive with Organomes, evoking the atmosphere of a back office for healthcare. It makes this future tangible and invites you to reflect: How much autonomy would you give up for effortless, continuous health? What happens to healthcare professionals, hospitals, schools and relationships when your biological double acts for you? And how might our ways of caring for one another change when our Organomes start to care too?
