PARKAN started with my encounter with two hand woven blankets that had belonged to my family for generations. Engaging in the laborious processes of stitching, mending, and repairing these blankets helped me build an intimate connection with the work of my ancestors.

PARKAN I

PARKAN I is an old blanket that was found in a severe state of disrepair and was heavily altered, cut and repaired again.

PARKAN II

PARKAN II is an old blanket that has been mended using remnants of other blankets from previous projects which had been dyed, now they are supporting the blanket, stopping the fraying, enabling the textile to continue to live.

Coming from a painting background I have recently started exploring the textile medium to reconnect with the weaving practices of my ancestors in Malta, as a way to better understand my dependency on land in a context of severe environmental loss.
