Schein Allein explores the use of trompe-l’œil techniques in product design. By imitating materials with this technique, a layered depth of meaning is created, which can unlock new possibilities of expression for product design.

Foam and Non-Foam

The use of “non-foam” as a furniture front allows foam to step beyond its typical, concealed context. Its absurd recontextualization as a visible surface invites the question: Why foam? and leaves the viewer considering: Why not? This moment of disruption draws attention to its non-materiality. Foam becomes a symbol of the excessive yet often invisible consumption of plastic in contemporary life. Its raw, unprocessed appearance in a functional object challenges the norms of material use and surfaces as a critique of plastic’s omnipresence. Trompe-l’œil, by creating distance between material and perception, provides a way to articulate this critique through design.

Paul Krüger explores the intersections of art and design through a practice that spans both design and curation. Driven by a deep interest in theoretical research, he seeks to expand the boundaries of product design and investigate how objects can embody and convey deeper meaning.
