Spread the Bread features a toaster printer as an alternative to big tech-managed social media. It focuses on expression and privacy by utilising toast's properties, such as its edibility and temporality.

Big-Tech and Expression

Big-Tech companies are a big power in our daily lives. From the way we get our information to how we communicate with each other. Through algorithms and censorship, they shape our experiences. A common response to surveillance or the possibility of a data leak is 'I have nothing to hide'. But laws and bills that, for instance, limit the right to protest and abortion rights around the world, we may have to rethink who we share what data with.

What alternative communication media could you imagine?

Stuck in the present and preoccupied by all that is happening, it's hard to imagine alternative futures. How can a speculative design, such as the toaster printer, trigger imagination and help us break free from the status quo?
And how can it let us reflect on that status quo, its implications and consequences?
