Taboo originated from the stigma surrounding menstruation. Instead of concealing menstrual products, Taboo chooses to make them deliberately visible. The object is a subtle statement. For some, an intriguing object in itself; for others, a spark for conversation and awareness.

Menstruation on Display

Although half of society menstruates, menstruation remains a taboo. Research shows that both women and men find it difficult to talk about. Menstruation is often perceived as something dirty or uncomfortable. For example, 49% of women feel uneasy about visibly carrying a menstrual product to the toilet in the presence of colleagues, fellow students, or acquaintances.

When menstruation is not openly discussed and complaints are dismissed as ‘women’s issues,’ a lack of knowledge arises, with serious consequences for the mental and physical health of those who menstruate.

With Taboo, Sanne seeks to break this stigma by making menstruation literally visible. The object is designed to function both practically and as a graphic statement for toilets and public spaces. For some, it is an aesthetic piece; for others, a starting point for conversation and awareness. Taboo invites reflection and contributes to a society in which menstruation is no longer hidden away, but seen and acknowledged.
