Under the title Workshop Wanted, he drives through Eindhoven with a stickered car and a fully loaded trailer. The trailer is filled with chairs, stools, cabinets, and cardboard boxes: it looks as if Teun is moving house. And that is exactly the point.

Context

He is literally packing up. Not as a practical action, but as an artistic and societal statement: in a city that presents itself as a design capital, it is becoming increasingly difficult for independent makers to find workspace.

Space for the maker culture in Eindhoven is under pressure. Creative hubs such as Sectie-C, originally established as raw and free workspaces for young designers, are increasingly being redeveloped. At Sectie-C, for instance, there are plans for the construction of 1,300 homes and 30,000 m² of commercial space, putting affordable studios at risk of disappearing.

Teun’s Workshop Wanted is a direct response to this development. Instead of remaining silent, he takes to the streets – with taped-up boxes, furniture stacked inside the trailer, and a “search poster” displayed on his car window. His presence is temporary, messy, and impossible to ignore: just like the issue he is addressing.

Location

Teun “moves” across places where creativity should find a home, but where space is becoming increasingly scarce.

He stays on site with his car and trailer, nothing is unpacked. The work exists in transit, just like his search. Along the way, he engages with passers-by about the importance of physical space for designers.

Teun Zwets (1992) is a Dutch designer who works without a fixed plan. His furniture pieces arise from impulsive finds, leftover materials, and intuitive combinations. In 2021, he won the Kazerne Design Award, exhibited at venues including Rossana Orlandi in Milan, and created work for clients such as Heineken, G-Star, and Piet Hein Eek. His work is raw, playful, and bold – just like his way of taking action.
