Education development tool for and by educators

The toolkit 'House for Sustainable Education' is an initiative by designer Marieke de Roos, lecturer Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD) and researcher at the Co-Design research group of the HU University of Applied Sciences. The tool was developed together with lecturers and students from various programmes, researchers, policymakers, and managers. The staff of the CMD Makerspace made a significant contribution to the development of the toolkit, which has been produced as sustainably as possible in collaboration with local partners.

The toolkit consists of a game box and game board and puzzle pieces made from circular wood, recycled plastic pawns and a reusable stone paper reflection canvas and question cards with questions and examples of good practices within HU University of Applied Sciences. Players can add new questions and examples on blank cards.

Working on sustainable education and sustainable change

Education plays a key role on the path to a sustainable future. To prepare students for those future challenges, an educational transformation is necessary. An education that contributes to a sustainable future for everyone and focuses on restoring the balance between ecology, society, and economy.

HU University of Applied Sciences aims for all its programs to provide sustainable education. Teachers and students may have different insights into the future and how education can contribute to it. It is essential to maintain the dialogue as an educational team and to shape it together. The toolkit 'HUis for Sustainable Education' aims to stimulate the dialogue in higher education programs to initiate sustainable transition. The tool is intended for educational teams consisting of teachers and change managers; they will translate the sustainable vision and goals into education and are responsible for realizing the sustainable transition.

Communication & Multimedia Design Utrecht

The Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD) Utrecht program educates designers for the future. Students work in creative teams on current challenges from society and professional practice. By experimenting with technology, imagination, and design methods, they arrive at innovative and often unexpected solutions. CMD designers are human-centered creators who shape the interactions between people, organizations, and systems. Digital technology naturally plays a key role in this process: it is the material through which they explore, experiment, and create meaningful experiences. CMD designers make use of diverse design methods, strategies, processes, and tools, while being mindful of the impact their work has on people, society, the environment, and organizations. They design from the values, needs, and desires of users, without losing sight of the broader consequences for society. In this way, CMD graduates become designers who not only adapt to change but actively help to shape it.
