Restlessness in my head, tension in my body: one of the downsides of our prosperity. I'm going absolutely crazy! And I need to get rid of it!

Society and our bodies

In this busy, demanding, performance-oriented, fast and digital society, I notice that both me and many others in my generation are increasingly neglecting our bodies. On one hand, we feel the pressure to get the most out of our lifes and try to juggle as many balls in the air as possible. On the other hand, we think we relax through our digital gadgets: we scroll through social media as a "break" between work or lay on the couch with our latest series. Our minds are restless and this reflects in our bodies, which (unconsciously) experience enormous tension as a result. Because this way of relaxing doesn't require any physical effort, we don't engage our bodies in the relaxation process. Our body doesn't unwind. On the contrary: social media can be a source of tension.

Liberation through our voice

As a singer, I've often noticed how important it is to actively engage the body in relaxation! Using our voices plays a major role in this. It allows me to fully connect with the present and release my daily frustration and stress. Because I want to offer others this physical way of relaxation, I created a space where this is possible.

In my scream booth, our daily tension can be expressed loudly and safely. By pushing against an increasingly heavy element, you can unleash a primal scream within yourself. A space where you can let go and release your tension through screaming.
From tension, through exertion, to relaxation.

programme.hosted_by.about Studio Sam van Haren

In a world where things are getting better and better, I actually don't feel so great at all. As a designer, I see it as my duty to constantly critically examine my surroundings. I'm fascinated by designs that challenge me: social concepts that question systems and create space for both personal and collective reflection. I explore how we can achieve true relaxation through effort. Do you have an idea, a place, or a question that calls for such a design? Feel free to contact me!
