Liquid Relic transforms residues from wastewater treatment into glass. Through material samples, objects and jewellery, Billie van Katwijk explores the potential of these overlooked materials and makes hidden flows within our water system visible.

From residue to glass

Wastewater treatment does not make unwanted materials disappear. After water is cleaned, residues remain. Liquid Relic investigates what these overlooked materials can become.

Billie van Katwijk incorporates residues from wastewater treatment into glass, where they influence colour and texture. Through experiments with fusing, slumping and lampworking, the research develops into a growing material archive alongside objects and jewellery.

At Dutch Design Week, Liquid Relic brings these different stages together: from raw residues and glass samples to prototypes and wearable objects.
