Monstrous Compositions is a research-based exploration into Dutch orthography and the broad mutations it feeds. The project serves as a critical questioning of linguistic purity through the practical development of speculative future writing forms.

A purist illusion

Within the Dutch language, it seems correctness is still valued over understandable fluidity. But when hearing and seeing this medley of characters, sounds, and their duplicates, one question arises:

What happens to the language when we further entangle these monstrous outcomes of the spelling system through the practice of simplification?

Perhaps an intentional degradation of written language will position it closer to its spoken counterpart. In ‘Monstrous Compositions’, I challenge the idea of a pure, correct form of language. Through simplification and physical entanglement of shape grounded in sound, I question current linguistic systems, with the underlying contemplation of how that written form will appear in the future.

Perhaps altering our writing system to become more friendly towards non-speakers will make the language more attainable to learn and understand. Isn’t that all we want when people decide to join our space and community? Shouldn't it serve as a physical manifestation of an inclusive, welcoming society?

Myrthe’s multidisciplinary practice, spanning design, printmaking, illustration, and narrative, questions the systems shaping daily life. Resisting convenience, she embraces slow, tactile methods where repetition becomes a conscious act. Exploring tensions between language and meaning, her layered works invite pause and inquiry, disrupting familiarity and urging curiosity, complexity, and beauty in sustained, deliberate making.
