As the largest employer in the Netherlands, you naturally want to make an impact on sustainability! The pilot sustainable collective labor agreement for the central government is sharing employee insights with employers, further driving the national government's sustainability efforts.

Employee ideas form the starting point

With 165,000 employees, the Dutch central government is the country’s largest employer. In the pilot duurzame CAO Rijk (Sustainable CLA for the National Government), trade unions and the employer work together to embed sustainability in both policy and daily practice. Ideas from employees are the starting point and are translated into experiments in areas such as employment conditions, mobility, workplaces, ICT, food and culture.

How sustainable is your work environment?

The approach brings policy and practice together and encourages sustainable choices at work, at home, and on the go. This goes beyond mere agreements on paper: the pilot directly addresses the daily reality of employees. How sustainable is your home workspace? How do you commute? What resources do you use, and what do you eat in the company restaurant?

From paper to reality in three phases

The pilot project contributes to structural change in three phases. First, ideas are translated into experiments. This is followed by pilot projects that are tested alongside implementation. Finally, the results are incorporated into policy and organizational structure. In this way, the central government contributes to climate goals and biodiversity, and, as the largest employer, sets a good example.
