Tactile Notation is a textile design project that transforms information into tactile surfaces. A self-developed notation system is embedded into translucent textiles, creating curtains that can be read through touch and used in interior spaces.

Textiles as Information Carriers

Tactile Notation explores how textiles can function as carriers of information. A self-developed tactile notation system translates information into sequences of physical marks, created using flocked and wooden elements on silk. The resulting textiles combine a visual pattern with a tactile layer that can be read through touch.
The textiles are designed as curtains for interior spaces. Their primary function as a spatial textile remains intact, while the surface carries an additional layer of information that is not immediately visible. Through touch, the marks can be explored and decoded, turning an everyday textile into a medium for communication.
The project brings together textile design, material development and information design. Instead of separating information from the objects that surround us, Tactile Notation integrates it directly into the material. The result is a functional textile that can be used, touched and read.
