(GROND)STOFFEN is an artistic research project into Dutch sheep wool by designer Sophie Nelissen. In her design studio SUFI, she transformed this (naturally a bit rougher) wool into soft, comfortable garments.

From sheep to slippers, socks and scarves.

Within Studio SUFI, designer Sophie Nelissen uses materials from local ecosystems to create textiles. In the project (GROND)STOFFEN, she worked with Dutch wool sourced from sheep that graze local nature reserves.

In her project, she explored how this wool – which is naturally less soft than other wools such as merino - can be transformed into soft, wearable garments. To this end, she developed various types of industrial yarns to test in different knitting and weaving techniques. The result is a small clothing collection. Almost a full look - only at sheep wool leggings did she draw the line.

Both the research process and the resulting materials and garments will be showcased during Dutch Design Week in the Textile & Material Innovation HUB in the Klokgebouw.

About Studio SUFI

Sophie Nelissen started her design studio SUFI because she wanted to produce her own favourite clothes in a better way. She investigates how the ecosystems around us can provide materials for textiles. Materials such as local sheep wool, as showcased in the (GROND)STOFFEN project at Dutch Design Week 2026. Or the wild flowers that she grows in her neighbourhood garden and uses for printing fabrics. Or, hopefully in the future, locally grown hemp. SUFI means 'made of wool' in Arabic.
